Why Therapeutic Massage?

During massage, your body releases its own natural pain killers called endorphins. The reduction in pain allows tight muscles to loosen, with the added bonus of calming your nerves and lowering anxiety. Massage may reduce backaches, headaches, neck and shoulder pain and soreness in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

We at Positive Body Dynamics maintain a continuing pursuit of excellence. Our certified professional massage therapists are available  to meet your needs and answer your questions.  Book your appointment today!

Everyone is a unique individual – as much as two bodies are alike – like fingerprints, they each are different. For some people one technique will work very well. For others, a combination of techniques or a completely different technique or process is needed. Most skilled health care professionals are educated to know when to refer a client for another form of therapy.

At Positive Body Dynamics our Professional Team of Massage Therapists incorporate many modalities to meet your individualized and specific needs, therefore our pricing reflects time increments rather than modalities. We look forward to serving you.

PRENATAL
MASSAGE

WHAT IS IT?

Massage therapy in pregnancy can include specific light and deep pressure massage, myofascial techniques, circulatory work, acupressure, reflexology, and other techniques.  Pregnancy massage therapy is beneficial throughout the nine months of a low-risk pregnancy. If you are not having a low risk pregnancy, discuss your condition with your physician or midwife.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

Massage therapy during pregnancy is not intended to replace appropriate prenatal care. When used as a form of adjunctive health care, some of its possible benefits are:

  • Reduces stress and increased relaxation

  • Reduces and alleviates neck, back, and joint pain caused by posture, muscle weakness, tension, extra weight, or imbalance.

  • Relieves muscle spasms, cramps, and fibrosis.

  • Combats tension, fatigue, and headaches,

  • Helps promote sleep and may reduce blood pressure

  • Increases blood and lymph circulation, and supports the physiological process of gestation, by supporting the work of the heart, increasing cellular respiration, reducing edema, and contributing to sympathetic nervous system sedation.

  • Reduces the possibility of problems with swelling, and varicose veins

  • Assists with the management of digestive complaints such as constipation, gas, nausea, and indigestion

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

A thorough massage session takes at least one hour, during which you will be comfortably supported with our specially designed pregnancy cushions that allow you to lay safely on your “tummy” while you and baby are completely supported. For maximum comfort, avoid heavy eating and drinking for two hours before your session.

Contraindications

Complication of pregnancy, which would contraindicate massage therapy, needs to be consulted with and resolved with your midwife/physician before receiving pregnancy massage.

HOT STONE
MASSAGE

WHAT IS IT?

Hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones to warm up tight muscles so she can work on pressure points and problem areas to alleviate tension and stress. Hot stones may either be placed on the body or used as an extension of the therapist's hands, which allows the therapist to work more deeply and more quickly.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

This massage treatment is not only for relaxation! Hot stone massage can

  • Relieve tension due to chronic muscle soreness

  • Help to promote sleep

  • Relieve pain related to autoimmune disease

  • Boost immunity

  • It can even decrease cancer and chemo symptoms like fatigue, nausea, depression, and pain.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A full body hot stone session can be achieved in a 90 or 120 min massage session. There is a $12 add on charge for this service.

DEEP TISSUE
MASSAGE

WHAT IS IT?

Deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons, and fascia.

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly, you should feel better than ever within a day or two.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

  • Treats Neck and Back Pain

  • Helps Arthritis Pain/Symptoms

  • Breaks Down Scar Tissue

  • Relieves Stress

  • Increase Joint Mobility

  • Reduces Chronic Pain

Why GET IT?

A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, scar tissue, release toxins from muscles, and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because many toxins are released, it’s important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.

SWEEDISH
MASSAGE

WHAT IS IT?

The term “Swedish Massage” refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.

WHY GET IT?

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program to stress management. Swedish massage is often used to warm up the tissue and locate areas of deep muscular tension that tells the therapist were deep tissue or trigger point therapy work is needed.

TRIGGER POINT RELEASE

WHAT IS IT?

A trigger point is a hyper-irritable tender spot in an abused muscle that refers pain (triggers pain) to other muscles. If the trigger points are not treated, they can be the culprits in lingering pain even after an injury has healed, and they are a big reason why the headaches, neck aches, and backaches keep returning year after year.

Some of the causes of trigger point activity in your muscles are repetitive stress, injury, overuse, strain, as well as chemical, drugs, alcohol, and environmental pollutants.

Active trigger points keep the muscles tight, restricting blood flow and compressing nerves perpetuating a vicious pain-spasm cycle in the muscles. The effect of decreased flexibility limits movement encouraging postural patterns which may sustain the cycle for years. Trigger Point Release Therapy is a valuable component of preventive as well as rehabilitative care.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

  • Decreased pain

  • Fewer headaches

  • Improved range of motion

  • Improved flexibility

  • Better posture

  • Increased blood flow and tissue hydration

  • Calming effect on the nervous system

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The various neuromuscular techniques to release trigger points and restore movement are being studied today by many health care professionals. Some of the neuromuscular therapy techniques, also referred to as neuromuscular re-education, are:

  • Frictioning across the muscle fibers and ends of muscles

  • Shaking, stroking, and stretching of muscles and fascia

  • Joint movements, isometric exercises and stretching

  • Direct pinpoint pressure on the trigger point

  • Release of associated skin, tendon, and ligament trigger points

  • Myofascial Release

  • Fascial Smoothing

REFLEXOLOGY
REFLEXOLOGY

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT TIME?

A treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

WHAT IS IT?

Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas on the feet and hands corresponding to all the parts of the body including major organs.

It is believed that applying pressure to specific areas on the feet, hands and ears can affect internal organs and body systems, and therefore promote good health. Pressure is applied to clear out congestion and restore normal functioning and health.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

Reflexology has many benefits. It feels great. It is pleasant and soothing, and it relaxes the body. Each person responds to reflexology in a unique way and on occasions may experience a variety of short term reactions, for example:

  • Extreme Relaxation

  • Tiredness

  • Lethargy or tearfulness

Reflexology is not a “cure-all”. However, it does help relieve pain associated with:

  • Migraine

  • Sinus Problems

  • Breathing Disorders

  • Digestive Problems

  • Circulatory Problems

  • Back Problems,

  • Tension

  • Stress.

ACUPRESSURE

WHAT IS IT?

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of acupuncture, and involves the use of finger pressure (without the needles) on specific points along the body. Chinese cultures believe the points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry energy called chi. Western scientists have also mapped out and proven the existence of these points using electrical devices.

The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates in the muscle tissue. The accumulation of toxins causes stiffness throughout the body. Stiffness in muscles puts abnormal pressure on the nerves, and blood and lymph vessels. This pressure affects both skeletal systems and internal organ functioning.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

  • Pain

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Insomnia

  • Depression

  • Toothache

  • Dizziness

  • Menstrual Pain

  • Digestive Disorders

  • Nausea

  • Morning Sickness

  • Motion Sickness

  • Stress

  • Fatigue

In all cases, such massage techniques are employed in collaboration with other appropriate medical care.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

Acupressure is usually given in a similar fashion to traditional massage. Points on the body are massaged using finger or thumb, in a fairly rapid circular motion with a medium pressure. Some of the most common techniques are: Rubbing, Kneading, Percussion, and Vibration.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

WHAT IS IT?

A gentle form of manipulation, craniosacral therapy is a hands-on healing technique typically practiced by physical therapists, massage therapists, and chiropractors. Craniosacral therapists manipulate the craniosacral system, which includes the soft tissues and bones of the head (cranium), the spine down to its tail end (the sacral area), and the pelvis.

They also work with the membranes that surround these bones and the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. Although the therapist uses a touch so light that many patients don’t even notice it, most people report feeling profoundly relaxed after a treatment.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

By clearing the blockages, craniosacral therapy may help to:

  • Boost general well being

  • Reduce stress

  • Improve the quality of sleep

  • Increase energy

  • Enhance the functioning of all the body’s organs.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Craniosacral therapists believe that the movement of the spinal fluid within and around the central nervous system creates a vital body rhythm, no less important to health and well-being than the heartbeat or the breath.

Cerebrospinal fluid bathes the brain and central nervous system in a rich mixture of proteins, electrolytes, amino acids, and other essential nutrients. When the craniosacral system is properly aligned, proponents say, the central nervous system can efficiently deliver these substances to the rest of the body.

SPORTS
MASSAGE

WHAT IS IT?

Sports massage helps alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. When minor injuries and lesions occur due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively.

The massage will help prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, relieve swelling, reduce muscle tension, promote flexibility and prevent injuries.

Sports massage can help prevent those annoying injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a person is a marathoner or a once a week jogger.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES AND TECHNIQUES

Depending on the needs of the athlete, a variety of techniques are used. The technique often involves a blend of traditional Swedish massage and deep tissue specifically designed to treat professional athletes.

Each type of sport has different demands on the players. Each sport uses muscle groups in a different way. Sports massage is designed to address those specific concerns and may differ according to the sport the athlete plays. Sports massage can help heal strained muscles and allow healthy muscles to reach peak performance while minimizing the risk of injury.

Sports massage has many benefits. In addition to FEELING GOOD, it reduces the heart rate and blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, reduces muscle tension, improves flexibility, and relieves pain.

Sports Massage can also include pre-event, post-event, and maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury, and reduce recovery time.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

WHAT IS IT?

Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

WHAT DOES IT HELP?

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder

  • Muscle and joint pain

  • Migraine headaches

  • Back pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Injuries due to poor shoulder or hip alignment

WHAT IS FASCIA?

Connective tissues called fascia surround our muscles and envelop our entire bodies. In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When we experience physical trauma, scarring, or inflammation, however, the fascia loses its pliability. It becomes tight, restricted and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Trauma, such as a fall, whiplash, surgery or just habitual poor posture over time and repetitive stress injuries has a cumulative effect. The fascia can exert excessive pressure producing pain or restriction of motion. They affect our flexibility and stability, and are a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and strain.
