Thai massage has been taught and practiced in Thailand for more than 2,500 years, and has recently become very popular in the West. It involves the application of pressure, stretching, joint range of motion techniques and work along energy channels. Thai massage is performed without any lubricants. Clients wear loose-fitting clothes and lie on a soft mat or futon on the floor. The practitioner uses fingers, thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to perform the techniques. The effect is relaxing as well as energizing. Because of the many yoga-like movements and fluidity of treatment, it is sometimes referred as “paired yoga,” “yoga for lazy people,”Thai yoga massage,” or “yoga massage.”

Thai massage is suitable for clients of all ages and abilities. It can be performed on the old and the young, those in excellent health and those in fragile health, those who are experienced in receiving many types of bodywork and those who have never received any. It may be especially attractive to those who feel uncomfortable removing their clothes for a massage treatment.
People can receive Thai massage just for relaxation or to help them with specific conditions. In particular, Thai massage can help the client regain or increase flexibility and ease of movement. Muscular and joint tension can be released and, to a certain extent, some of the internal organs such as the stomach and intestines, can be stimulated. Thai massage can also help alleviate insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches, muscular tension, constipation and sinus congestion. In some cases it can also help increase local circulation and the movement of lymph.
